Linville Paul Thornton

Rate/Rank: Wiper, Merchant Marine

Son of William Augustus and Sytha Dulcina Russell Thornton

Brother of Milton Louis, John Hugh, Annie Ruth, W. A., James Allen, and Marion A. Thornton

Beloved of Anna Beatrice Shearer

Born: October 24, 1923, Hickory Plains, Arkansas

Age on July 9, 1943: 19

Paul was an avid reader, early on showing an interest in history, government, and the world around him. A self-disciplined, moral young man, he was also patient and kind, respected by friends and family alike.

He was well-informed as well as highly idealistic. When he chose to join the Merchant Marines, he knew there was great risk, but he wanted to serve his country. He put his plans for the future on hold until the war was over -- until the world could “re-balance itself” -- having full confidence that he would be able to continue his education when he returned home to his family and to the girl he asked to wait for him.
